What is it? Herpes is a virus that causes painful blisters on the mouth, penis, ass or vagina.

Symptoms & Effects
The blisters swell and burst and become painful sores that last a few weeks. The virus stays in the body and can start a new outbreak of blisters again. Stress or illness can trigger the blisters. The best way to tell if you have herpes is to have a medical provider look at the blisters when they happen.
Herpes is usually passed on when you have sex, and that includes oral or anal sex too. It's also possible to get herpes sores from coming in contact with someone when the sores are present on their body. If you see sores on your partner's body, don't touch them with any part of your body! If you have sores, don't let other people touch them. If you do touch the infected area, wash right away with soap and hot water.

Condoms and dental dams are not guaranteed to stop herpes. If you want to be 100% sure you don't get herpes, then avoid all physical contact with the infected area. And guess what – you really need to talk with your partner before you have sex. Being able to be honest and talk about these diseases is the best way to protect yourself.
